The words “nerd” and “geek” have gone from being derogatory terms of persecution to morphing into virtual badges of honor. The nerds are now the cool kids, waving their geek flags high with their love for comics books, sci-fi and fantasy at the forefront.
One of the places this remains obvious is at Drink & Draw, a monthly figure drawing event that I host at the Mellow Mushroom pizza joint in downtown Decatur, Ga. The models don meticulous costumes depicting some of the greatest super heroes and genre characters of all time. The Mellow Mushroom bar becomes the stage and the restaurant itself an honorary Hall of Justice. Art students, comic book creators and armchair illustrators of all ages gather with their pads, pencils and easels and immortalize the models on paper.
As far as the models go, let’s just say they seem to slide into the often form-fitting costumes with ease, making them more like hipster heroes than stereotypical basement dwelling mouth breathers.
Not only are these models great representations of comic book creations, but some even pose as inspiration for comic book artists themselves. One of this month’s models, Alisa Farrington, actually served as the model for DC Comics artist George Perez when he was creating a recent version of Supergirl.
